Leg Pains and Cramps

Lеg сrаmрs, аlѕо knоwn аѕ Chаrlеу hоrѕеѕ, occur when thеrе are involuntary соntrасtіоns оf уоur lеg muѕсlеѕ.   These are some of the most bothersome symptoms patients experience with vein disease.   The leg cramps contribute to the pain, restless legs and have a significant impact on quality of life.  Fortunately, when vein disease is the cause, the diagnosis can be made simply with accurate history taking and appropriate selection of imaging tools such as ultrasound.

Leg pains and cramps can have multiple causes, but those caused by varicose veins have a several unique features:

  • Heaviness in the leg that worsens towards the end of the day and eases with rest and elevation
  • “Charlie horse” or pain sensation in the feet or calves
  • Swelling of the calves or ankles that also worsens toward the end of the day
  • Restless leg syndrome, involuntary urges to shift your legs to alleviate discomfort
It’s important to note these symptoms can be related to varicose veins even if none are visible on the skin.  The best course of action is to have a vein consultation and see if treatment can be beneficial.

Venaseal

VenaSeal™ is a procedure that uses a special glue to close off damaged veins.  The procedure is safe and as effective as RF ablation.

Clarivein

Combines two techniques to treat underlying venous insufficiency.  A small catheter is used to both chemically and mechanically treat the diseased vein.  Select veins are good targets for treatment.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Phlebectomy is not stripping.  Instead these brief procedures are offered only by skilled clinics and remain one of the best options for bulging varicose veins. Done under local anesthesia in an office setting, the vein is removed in small sections through tiny incisions.
